How We Solved a Complex Problem by Asking a Simple Question

Our business is all about problem-solving. We work with customers in a wide range of industries, and they’re each facing their own unique sets of challenges.

But it’s amazing how many of these challenges can be met, and how many problems can be solved, just by asking a few simple questions.

Four Shades of Green

We recently visited a new customer who works in the machinery OEM sector.

Up until recently, they had been using several suppliers for their vinyl logos. Walking the factory floor, we noticed that across a range of models, the customer’s main green logo appeared in four different styles.

Or so it seemed. On closer inspection, we found that the main design was the same on all models but there were four distinctly different shades of green.

We shouldn’t have to explain why this was a problem. The OEM sector is one that thrives on accuracy. Different shades of green across multiple models looks unprofessional. Buyers would be well within their rights to think – if they got this wrong, then how can their machines be trusted?

The Root of the Problem

We looked deeper into this problem. It eventually emerged that the different engineers on each model had specified a different grade of vinyl. Some had opted for a 5 year life material, and others a 7 year life option.

So we took a look at the sample swatches for the vinyl they’d chosen. Sure enough, there were two shades of green to choose from, both of which were close to the company’s corporate colours.

Because the colour and material were not fully specified on the drawings, the supplier was allowed to select their own version of the logo colour. This is how we ended up with four different shades of green across the range, as there were four possible opportunities for mismatch.

A Simple Solution for a Complex Problem

All we had to do was ensure that everyone was on the same page.

First we got the engineers and the buying team to agree on a required material life – 5 years or 7 years, pick one. Then we got them to agree on the correct choice of green from the two readily available.

And so as to ensure that this mismatch never happens again, the colour and material reference is now specified on all the drawings for all models across the range.

This simple action of asking the question and specifying the preferred option has not only saved time from our production point of view, but has given the customer’s products a corporate identity and a consistent finish.

At MTM Labels we pride ourselves on being the solutions providers. Whatever you need, we’ll draw from our expertise to ensure that everything we deliver is absolutely fit for purpose – and a lot of this boils down to asking the right questions.
