I recently visited a customer who was facing a common problem: Their vinyl labels were adhering inconsistently, and regularly washing down their machines was causing their labels to peel away from the material surface.

But like all the problems faced by our customers, a few simple questions were all it took to find a solution.

Are you having problems applying the labels all the time, all year round? Have you specified any changes to the material the labels are applied to?

As I started to delve a little deeper we found that there were two distinct areas to consider:

First, the design of the label itself - A rectangular safety label, manufactured to their drawing with square cut corners.

My advice? Update the drawing to a specification with rounded corners. A simple idea, but you'd be amazed at how much more resilient labels with rounded corners are. They last through multiple wash-downs, and because there's no corners to lift, people aren't tempted to absent-mindedly peel at them during their idle moments.

Second, the general adhesion of the labels - Across the board, it seems that the peeling had only started in the last three months.

So now it was the customer's turn to ask us a question: Have you changed your adhesive specification?

A quick call to the team back at base confirmed that no changes had been made.

So I asked: Have you made any changes to the finish of the body of the machine?

Not really. But for environmental reasons, they had changed the powder coat specification to a water-based version.

There you have it: It turns out that emoving the solvents had changed the surface properties of the material, which in turn affected the adhesion of the labels.

So all we had to do was check the specification of this powder coat and upgrade our adhesive specification. Problem solved!

We produced new label samples, and thorough testing revealed that these labels would last and last.

Communication is Vital

Unless manufacturers take the time to ask questions like these, small details can often be overlooked, resulting in multiple problems down the line.

We always ask the questions, simply because we want to ensure that we're truly meeting our customers' needs, and that they're truly getting what they're paying for.

The result a consistent product, a happy customer and repeat business for MTM.

So if you're having any issues with your current provider, get in touch. We know just the questions to ask that'll solve all your problems.
